Article in the Frankfurter Allgemeinen Sonntagszeitung

The article about transhumanism based on your interview with Sabine Magerl
was published in the Frankfurter Allgemeinen Sonntagszeitung yesterday. [January 21, 2002]

It is quite good. The title (translated to English) is “Enterprise
Immortality” and the subtitle “California in our heads: How the
transhumanists search for eternal life”. I am forwarding you the scanned
text from a post on the German transhumanist e-mail list.

There are some pictures of Natasha and you and (probably) of Natasha’s Primo
3M+ (according to the description in the e-mail below – I didn’t see the
article directly). A big part of the text is about improving the human body
and immortality. There is also input from a German transhumanists meeting in
Munich and some statements of Natasha. The article was even announced on the
front page of the newspaper. I think it is good to raise interest in

Organization: Le Point
My name is Helene Vissiere. I am a French journalist based in San Francisco, working for a newsmagazine called Le Point which is like Time.
For a next issue, I am planning to write about the Extropian movement and its influence. I have read texts you or your collegues wrote and I looked at your website but I have some more questions.
I spoke to Helene for 45 minutes the next week. She said she would send me the story when it came out.

LA Weekly, “The Transhumanists”, cover story written by Brenden, published Bernhard February 16, 2001.

Live from Extro-5, by Ronald Bailey

At their latest convention, the “Extropians” unveil their vision of a limitless future. Take a look at the details.

POSSIBLES ON EXTRO-5: Wired, Charles Platt, San Jose Mercury News, <>Newsweek

Today’s Los Angeles Times has an editorial sounding a cautionary note on germline engineering, and it mentions the Extropy Institute.

(that link may not work after today):

Americans might be surprised to know that germline engineering is supported not only by fringe think tanks like the Los Angeles-based Extropy Institute (mission statement: “Incubating Positive Futures”) but also by some top scientists. MIT economist Lester Thurow says “biotechnology is inevitably leading to a world in which plants,

animals and human beings are going to be partly man-made.” James Watson–the co-discoverer of DNA, the former head of the National Institutes of Health and a Nobel laureate–is the most blunt of all. “No one has the guts to say it,” Watson says, but “if we could make better human beings by knowing how to add genes, why shouldn’t we?”

  • French Internet magazine (Transfert): To appear June 2001? (Journalist: Alexander Piquard.)
  • New York food and cuisine magazine, June or July 2001. (Interviewed at manTRANSforms in New York, June 2001.)
  • Information Week, May 2001, quoted in story on Larry Ellison’s biotech investments.
  • Italian magazine (Class): Mentioned in story on Natasha. April-May 2001.

Designer People
The Human Genetic Blueprint Has Been Drafted, Offering Both Perils and Opportunities for the Environment. The Big Question: Are We Changing the Nature of Nature?
By Sally Deneen

“Designer People”:
Chapela is also worried about the lack of civic discourse. But the advocates are talking, particularly among themselves. At a Berkeley conference, one of them, Extropy Institute President Max More, stood before the crowd and read an open letter to Mother Nature:Sorry to disturb you, but we humans–your offspring–come to you with some things to say:
You have raised us from simple self-replicating chemicals to trillion-celled mammals; What you have made us is glorious, yet deeply flawed; We will no longer tolerate the tyranny of aging and death. Through genetic alterations, cellular manipulations, synthetic organs, and any necessary means, we will endow ourselves with enduring vitality and remove our expiration date.”
Other proponents are more sober, and include Nobel laureate scientists. “This is no ‘marginal’ movement or way of thinking,” Chapela says. “The group advocating human re-engineering includes extremely powerful, influential and wealthy people. So don’t expect them to roll over easily or soon.”

According to several people, I make a cameo appearance (under a different name) in Ken MacLeod’s The Cassini Division (August 2000).
